Sports academy to come up in Udupi

Udupi, Nov 2, 2016: Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Services and Sports, said here on Tuesday that the State government has sanctioned the construction of a sports academy in Udupi. He was speaking after unfurling the national flag at the Rajyotsava Day function organised by the district administration.

Pramod MadhwarMr. Madhwaraj said that the academy would provide basic facilities and training to budding athletes in athletics, including middle and long distance sprint, jumps and throws. As many as 150 athletes, including 75 girls and 75 boys, would be trained in the academy. The first instalment of Rs. 75 lakh had been released for the construction of a synthetic court at the District Tennis Court at Ajjarkad in the city. Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha member, had released Rs. 1 crore from his MP’s Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds for this synthetic court. The cost of construction of the District Tennis Court was estimated at Rs. 3.5 crore.
