Special revision of electoral rolls launched, citizens must use

Mangaluru, Oct 2, 2016: Deputy Commissioner Dr K G Jagadeesha, who is also the district electoral officer, told media on Oct 1, Saturday that a special drive to revise electoral rolls and inclusion of new voters, has been taken up starting Saturday (October 1) following the directions from ECI, Election Commission of India.
It includes, announcement of existing draft electoral rolls, followed by receiving of prescribed forms on claims and objections (between October 1 and 31), verification of the electoral rolls and reading out the part numbers at respective Gram Sabhas, urban local bodies and other meetings (October 7 to 14), special drive along with booth level agents to receive claims and objections (October 16 and 23), settling of claims and objections (November 30) and final announcement of voters list on January 10, 2017.
Online facility : The DC said the eligible voters can also enrol their names online at ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in. The manual verification of draft voters list can be conducted at respective offices of tahsildar, assistant commissioner and also city corporations. In case of any corrections in the existing list, the voters should submit Form 8 (available at respective offices), followed by Form 8(A) for transfer, Form 6 (enrolment) and Form 7 (removal of names).
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumara said 4,24,662 errors identified in the voters list have been rectified. It includes 696 similar documents, 560 photographs, 5,376 dead voters and 9,849 voters who have migrated to other places, he added.
According to the available voters list, there are 16,23,847 voters, including 8,03,226 men and 8,20,621 women, he added.
Complaints : District BJP President Sanjeev Mathandoor brought it to the notice of the deputy commissioner that retired persons, especially those in banking sector, are finding it difficult to enrol their names in the voters list. Mathandoor explained that, most of the people hailing from the district, who migrate to other places for jobs, have been returning to the district after retirement. Such people, though eligible to vote, find it difficult to enrol their names in the voters list as they are asked to produce several documents in support of their claims, he claimed. He also sought the help of the district administration in training booth level agents, besides taking a call on shifting booths in required places. He also blamed that some booth level officers lack of adequate information. District Congress Committee Acting President Ibrahim Kodijal, who seconded Mathandoor’s grievance related to retired persons, described it as a genuine problem to be addressed by the authorities.
