Speaker Kagodu vexed over the issue of cleanliness in govt hospital

Mangaluru: August 14, 2015: The user fee collected from patients in government hospitals should be utilised for providing better treatment for poor patients, said Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa.

 

He was speaking after inaugurating the renovated dialysis wing at the Wenlock Hospital and also, a workshop on the role of elected representatives in building a healthy society, here on Wednesday.

Kagodu said in case of shortage of medicines in the hospital, poor patients should not be asked to get medicines from outside. The user fee amount should be utilised by the hospital authorities to get medicines from outside for the benefit of such needy patients.

He asked the Health minister to focus on cleanliness in government hospitals. Cleanliness and hygiene in government hospitals were not up to the mark, he said and added that transparency in administration should be ensured with efforts from elected representatives. The elected representatives of the gram panchayats, taluk panchayats and the zilla panchayats, including the ZP presidents and the vice-presidents should monitor the functioning of the primary health centres (PHCs), sub-centres, taluk hospitals and the district hospitals.

Expressing his displeasure over the fact that people did not respect public properties, Kagodu said, most of them spit on the walls and corners of the public buildings. Even the hospitals are not spared. The security guards posted in the hospitals should ensure that the public maintained cleanliness on the hospital premises.

The Speaker suggested the Health minister to adopt a new approach in the Health department through people-friendly activities. All the district and the taluk hospitals should have dialysis wings to help patients with acute / chronic renal failure. Lab technicians should be trained and recruited in all the hospitals.

Kagodu said: “After I took the Heath minister to task, the process of appointing doctors to government hospitals has begun. Also, the salary of the doctors has also been hiked.”
Expressing his views on the condition of bad roads, the Speaker also came down heavily on the condition of the National Highway. Visitors to M’luru are welcomed with large potholes on the stretch. “If a National Highway is filled with potholes, one can imagine the roads in rural areas,” he said.
