Source segregation of wastes to be launched in Mangaladevi, Mannagudda wards on pilot basis

Mangaluru, Feb 28, 2015 : City Mayor Mahabala Maarla informed media men here on February 28, Saturday that the  MCC plans to initiate the task of source segregation of waste beginning from March 15. He said the system would be launched on a pilot basis In Mangaladevi and Mannagudda wards.

The Mayor also stated  that the MCC  was expecting  to achieve  90 per cent coverage in the door to door garbage collection within the  next couple of weeks.


MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati who also spoke, said dry waste will be collected on Wednesdays while wet wastes will be collected  on the remaining six days   from March 15.She also said educative programmes including street plays and painting contests on the theme will be organised to sensitize the public on the waste segregation at source.


A press communiqué issued on the occasion states that the door to door garbage collection contract agency Antony Waste Handling Pvt Ltd has been given a  seven year  contract and that the MCC has initiated the process of collecting SWM cess along with property tax. Under the new system as many  as 74 tippers and 35 compacters are used and over 300 personnel are on duty. The release said the primary and secondary transportation vehicles  are fitted with GPS  while  eight CCTV cameras  are installed at the compost plant.
