The Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011 survey report released on Monday indicates that the male-female ratio in Udupi is 1000:1036, the highest in the state. Which means the girl child is welcomed unlike in other parts of the country where female feticide is rampant leading to a skewed sex ratio.

Experts and sociologists feel the social background and tradition of the region have contributed to such numbers. “Traditionally, the girl child was not neglected in this region and discrimination against girls which we see in the rest of the state is negligible here,” Mangaluru University sociology department associate professor Dr Vinay Rajath D told Sources.

“People are not obsessed with having a male child. The local culture does not discriminate against women. The two main communities-Bunts and Billavas- follow ‘Aliya Kattu’ tradition and are matriarchal in nature with women given due importance,” he said adding, “Girls are more in number in schools, there are no dropouts.”
