Mangaluru, Apr 30, 2018: Well known Ganapathi High School road is in the heart of Hampankatta, famous as GHS Road.

This lovable road is full of activity since it connects to various cross roads that lead to important areas including Hampankatta signal circle, Wenlock District Hospital, Dr. U.P. Mallya Road, Panje Mangesh Rao Road and Sharavu Temple. Though it is not very broad it is gives much for the development of this now smart city.

The road derives its name from the Ganapathi Group of Education Institutions located here. This established  education institution was established in 1870. This school started as a cultural school near Sri Umamashwara Temple and developed into a model school. The people belonging to Saraswath  Community (Konkanis) and residing here started the school. Saraswatha education society managed the administration. Many people provided charity to this institution.

In 1915, the school got transferred to its present location. Presently the group of institutions is made of Ganapathi Kannada Medium Primary School, Ganapathi Kannada Medium High School, Ganapathi Pre-University College and Ganapathi English Medium School. This group of educational institutions have produced many famous students.


GHS Road is a shopaholic’s paradise with a continuous string of a variety of shops of which Felix Pai Bazaar is well known.  It is a very old structure and has only undergone a few alterations with time. One can get a variety of items here ranging from the traditional to the modern.

Kamath and Co is famous among shoppers for its modern household steel equipment. Very close to it lies Janatha Bazaar. This bazaar known for its cooperative functioning is a favourite stop for people. Tokyo Market along GHS Road is a modern market dealing with modern equipments. There were other private stores here which have now migrated to other locations.

GHS Road which connect to the signal road is one of the busiest roads in the city. The major attraction here are the fancy stores. Bharat fancy store lies first in the row of fancy stores. All types of items are available under this one roof. Such is the variety it possesses.  Always full of activities with a variety of shops and services that are available here including banks, jewelry, various professionals, health centres, government offices, flower and vegetable stores.

Hotel choices :   GHS Road is the dream land for a foodie. The road has a wide choice of eateries. First and foremost comes Ideals Ice Cream Parlour. Ideals is the icon of Mangaluru. The ‘Gadbad’ of Ideals is must have speciality of Mangaluru. 

The Pereira hotel here has its own 50-year-old tradition and is much loved by the people. It is a favourite destination among all.

Sri Krishna Bhavana here is a favourite boarding and lodging destination among vegetarians. The food served here is in the traditional method where one has to sit on the floor and the food is served on banana leaves. This age old tradition is still followed here.

Hotel Srinivas is famous for various reasons. Srinivas Group of Institutions is a big name in the fields of education, hotel and other areas. It is worth mentioning that all these activities took birth from this location.

A famous eatery Krishna Bhavan was there a few steps from Pereira hotel. Now it is only exists in memory. Mohini Vilasa is one of the oldest and  famous hotel along this road. It has now undergone renovation and has been slightly relocated.

GHS Road is now rapidly modernizing. There are up-market lodging facilities here. Many new shopping options have turned up including twin stores, ready made garments shop, decorative goods shop, children’s garments, gift shop and service centres, thus making this area a shopping hub that serves the city in unimaginable ways and set to become the city’s smart hub.
