The reconstruction work of the old underpass which is near the newly constructed railway underpass on NH 73 at Padil, is being carried speedily and is expected to be completed by June. .

Earlier, the newly constructed 62 meters long railway underpass, costing 16.50 crore rupees at Padil was inaugurated last year in November.  The old railway underpass was at a low lying area and would be virtually flooded during the monsoons. This flooding led to the formation of potholes, causing great inconvenience to commuters on the national highway. This gave birth to heavy traffic density and jams lasting for hours together. To solve this problem, the width of the national highway has been increased from 1.5meters to 1.8meters.

Though earlier, several accusations levied on the height of the newly constructed underpass, currently all the vehicles go through without facing any trouble. This underpass was constructed as per the rules of the Indian Road Congress (IRC) which states that an underpass must have a height of 5.50 meters and a width of 12.50 meters.

The current underpass being built at the cost of 6 crore rupees will also be built at a similar height. A container, a vehicle has a maximum height of 4.8 meters.

Road works
:  Currently, the railway department is handling the reconstruction of the old railway underpass. The work is being done making use of hydraulic technology which involves pushing boxes. The technical work will   get complete in May.

NHAI will start repairing the approach road to the underpass, as soon as the construction of the underpass is completed. As per the requirement, the approach road to the underpass from front and back will be elevated by NHAI with mud bedding.

Work method :  The newly opened railway underpass at Padil was constructed even while the trains passed through overhead. This was made possible with the use of hydraulic technology. Using this technology, box after box were pushed one after another to create the tunnel. Other than the removal of mud, the remaining construction was done with the use of hydraulic technology at the newly opened railway underpass.

For the reconstruction of the old railway underpass that is being carried at Padil, no such heavy equipments are required for mud removal. Since there already is a tunnel here, concrete will be filled and the underpass will be built based on the box method of construction.
