Shri Rama Vidhya Kendra to host traditional puppet show on Nov 11

Mangalore, November 9: A Yakshagana puppet show titled “Chinnara Angalakke Putthalli Yatre” will be staged at Shri Rama Vidhya Kendra, Kalladka, on Nov 11, Thursday. The programme has been sponsored by Infosys Chairperson Sudha Murthy and will be performed at 30 schools with the purpose of introducing young people to Yakshagana puppetry.

K. V. Ramesh Kasargod, the director of Shri Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangha and winner of the Rajyothsava Award, told mangaloretoday that the Sangha has conducted Yakshagana puppet shows in Paris, Dubai, Pakistan, and other countries. Recently, it has also received the Best Traditional Puppet Performance Award from the World Association of Puppeteers in Czechoslovakia Republic, he said. The Sangha has been promoting traditional Yakshagana puppetry ever since September 1981, he added.


Dr. Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, the chairman of Shri Rama Vidhya Kendra in Kalladka, will inaugurate the programme. Kumble Sundar Rao, Harikrishna Punaroor, and Pradeep Kumar Kalkura will be the chief guests. Kajampady Subrahmanya Bhat of RSS will preside over the event.


A demonstration of puppets related to the mythical episode “Narakaasura Vadhe” will also be held on the same day. The puppets used in the show are made of light wood, brightly painted, and dressed like the character in the story.


Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Shivaram Gowda and Jagadish Pulkoor were present at the press meet.
