Mangaluru, July 19, 2018: Sri Lakshmivara Theertha Swamiji of Shiroor Mutt passed away at the KMC Hospital, Manipal on Thursday morning due to suspected food poisoning. He was 55 years of age.
The Swamiji had complained of severe stomach ache after participating in a Vanamahotsava programme on Monday.
It is said initially the seer neglected it thinking it was a minor problem.
However when he suffered from excessive vomiting he was initially admitted to Gandhi Hospital in Udupi and was later rushed to KMC Hospital, Manipal where he was undergoing treatment.
It may be recalled here that the Shiroor seer was involved in a row with the other seers of the Ashta Mutts, regarding the Pattada Devaru of his Mutt.
He had also decided to go in for legal recourse.
Shiroor seer death case : Suspicion of poisoning, say doctors
A press release issued by KMC Hospital, Manipal with regard to the death of Shiroor Seer Sri Lakshmivara Theertha, has said that there was suspicion of poisoning. The communique was issued after the post-mortem report of the seer.
"The seer was brought to the hospital at 1 am on July 18 from a private hospital in Udupi and his condition was critically ill with breathlessness, severe hypotension and massive gastrointestinal bleeding. He had history of diarrhoea prior to this episode. All routine investigations were done,” the release stated and added that the toxicological samples have been sent for analysis.
