Shiradi Ghat ’green bypass’ to start in Nov, finish in 2 years

Mangaluru, Mar 29, 2016:  Work on the proposal to have seamless corridor between Mangaluru and Bengaluru and beyond through the Shiradi Ghat through a green bypass comprising tunnels and bridges may start by November and get completed within two years.  The Karnataka Public Works Department has to submit the detailed project report by June, said Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari here on March 28, Monday.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for four-laning of 141-km of National Highway 75 (Bengaluru-Mangaluru) between Hassan and BC Road, excluding Shiradi Ghat, at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,358 crore and dedicating completed projects of his Ministry here.

Minister Gadkari said that the 18.5-km green bypass comprising 7.7 km of tunnels, 3.9 km of bridges and 6.9 km of surface roads, could boost the economy of the coastal region and offer connectivity between two major ports — New Mangalore Port in the West and the Chennai Port in the East.

There would be at least seven tunnels, the longest would be around 2.5 km, and among the six bridges, the longest would be 1.5 km, he said.

The State Public Works Department is getting the detailed project report prepared through the Japan International Agency for Cooperation, which has conducted several surveys.  Speaking earlier, Union Minister for Law and Justice D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa made fervent appeals to the Minister to take up the green bypass project without delay.
