Mangaluru, July 5, 2016: The phase 2, of road reconstruction on the Shiradi Ghat stretch under package 2 is likely to commence by September this year after the monsoon and it is expected to be completed by March 2017.

An official of the National Highways division of the Public Works Department said this at a meeting of a district vigilance and monitoring committee chaired by Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, on July 4, Monday. The package involves concreting a 13-km stretch between Kempu Hole guesthouse and Adda Hole near Gundya and bitumen laying on a 21-km of stretch between Gulagale and Heggadde. GVR Infra Projects Ltd. had bagged the contract to execute the work at a cost of Rs. 118 crore. Executive Engineer M.O. Ramesh said that the contractor had rebuilt 11 of the 25 culverts on the stretch. The remaining could be rebuilt only after completely stopping vehicular movement on the ghat section, the officer said.

He added that if the contractor failed to procure the required material within 45 days, the government would consider cancelling the contract and call fresh tenders.  The top portion of Shiradi Ghat had been reconstructed with concrete last year under package 1.

Meanwhile, the government’s plan to widen the Charmadi Ghat, connecting Dakshina Kannada with Chikkamagaluru district and beyond, was on and the detailed project report for four-laning the ghat section was under preparation, the engineer said.

To a query by MP Kateel about the status of four-laning of NH 75 between B.C. Road and Gundya with concrete, an official said that the land acquisition process was under way.   Similar was the case with widening Mangaluru-Solapur NH (NH 169) between Mangaluru and Karkala, he said.

The work was expected to commence this financial year itself, the official said. It involves four-laning of the stretch between Mangaluru and Moodbidri and two-laning between Moodbidri and Karkala, including bypass roads at Gurupura and Moodbidri.
