Shiradi Ghat NH is set to open on August 10

Mangaluru: August 3, 2015: Finally, it is official. The Shirady Ghat road stretch on national highway between Mangaluru and Bengaluru will be opened for all types of vehicles on August 10.

Minister for forest, environment and ecology B Ramanath Rai said that an inspection by ministers and officials will be conducted on August 9 and the road will be opened for all types of vehicles on August 10. "I have spoken to Public Works minister H C Mahadevappa and we have decided to hold an inspection on August 9. The new 8.5 meter wide concrete road on 13.62 kms road stretch from Heggade to Kempuhole is ready. Only peripheral development works like shoulder filling, crash barriers and installation sign boards are pending. All works are expected to complete before August 9," Rai said.

The prominent road from the port city to state capital was closed for development on January 2. The work was taken up at a cost of Rs 69.90 crore and the contract was awarded to Mangaluru based Ocean Consstructions India Private Limited.

The new concrete road has five layers in it. While the road has geotextile sheet on its base, granular sub base (GSB), bed concrete, dry lean concrete (DLC) and pavement quality concrete (PQC) is expected to make the road long lasting. A total of four lakh bags of cement, 50,000 cubic meters of jelly, 35,000 cubic meters of GSB mix, 30,000 cubic meters of sand and 800 tons of steel were used for the concretization of the road stretch.
