Mangalore, May 6, 2012: One of the containers on Cap Norte, a ship transporting chemicals from Malaysia, caught fire on Saturday near Mangalore when it was on its way to Mumbai.
Since the fire was speedily extinguished by Savithri Bai Phule, a Coast Guard ship, five nautical miles away from the coast of Mangalore, it did not cause much damage.
The ship had a crew of 24 sailors on board.
The ship sent a distress message to the Coast Guard at 9:00 a.m.; accordingly, the Coast Guard got into action and extinguished the flames before they could do more damage.
The damaged ship was then brought closer to the New Mangalore Port.
