She specialises in long taxi drives

Mangaluru, Jan 23, 2015: What makes driver Shahara Baanoo stand apart from other women drivers is her tryst with long-haul taxi driving.

Popularly known as Sanam Nazeer in Puttur, the 37-year-old learnt driving from her father at the age of 13. She took the skill seriously about six years ago to support her family of four.

“I have driven to many parts of the country including Delhi and Mumbai. I just returned from a trip to Ballari,” Ms. Nazeer said.

Though she may not hesitate to take an all-men tour, she is busy catering to trips of family groups. She claimed she could drive without rest, up to 22 hours at a stretch. She has never met with an accident so far. “My only concern is obtaining a passenger vehicle driver’s badge. I studied only up to class seven. The new rules require an SSLC-pass to get the badge,” she said. She was felicitated during the 26th National Road Safety Week celebrations in Mangaluru on Thursday for helping road accident victims.
