Seven arrested for illegal attack on cow transporters

Udupi, Mar 09, 2016:  Tthe Kundapur police stated that 13 cows and bulls, including two calves of Gir breed, were being transported from Shiravi Samaj Goshala from Pune to a goshala at Neralakatte near Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada belonging to Ananth Kamath. The lorry with cows and calves had left Pune on March 7.

 

When the lorry was nearing the bridge on NH 66 at Tallur village around 1 p.m. on mar 8, Tuesday, a group of 25 to 30 youth belonging to various Sangh Parivar organisations, who were following it on their motorcycles, stopped it and asked the driver Raghu from Vellore district in Tamil Nadu, and Vasanth Kumar, manager of Neralakatte Goshala, to get down.

They asked what was in the lorry and alleged that the cows were being illegally transported.

Even as  Kumar was trying to show the permission and documents, the group manhandled  Raghu and  Kumar beat them with wooden rods. This led to tension in the area for some time.  Meanwhile, the police arrived on the scene after being informed about the incident. The police had to resort to mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

The district police arrested seven persons at Tallur village near Kundapur on Mar 8, Tuesday on the charge of assaulting two persons who were carrying cows in a lorry from Pune to Bantwal with required permission and documents. The remaining youth are absconding.

According to P.M. Diwaker, Kundapur Circle Inspector, the youth who were involved in the assault belonged to various Sangh Parivar organisations.  Raghu and  Kumar received medical treatment at the government hospital in Kundapur as outpatients and later left for Mangaluru with the cattle.

The seven arrested persons are: Kiran Devadiga (31) from Tallur, Manjunath Shetty (34), Raghavendra Mogaveera (33), Gopal Poojary (38), from Hemmady, H. Chandrashekhar Bhat (46) from Katbelthur, Balakrishna (28) from Haklady and Krishna Poojary (28) from Balgadde near Kollur.

A case had been registered Sections 143, 147, 148, 341, 322, 504 324, 506, and 149 of Indian Penal Code at Kundapur police station and investigations are on, the police said.
