According to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), swell waves are likely to continue in the State’s coastal belt today, Monday.

An INCOIS bulletin said : “There is durable evidence that high energy swell waves with heights between two metres and three metrs and in gaps of 17 seconds to  22 seconds are continued to be experienced in the seas around India. The high waves have been seen along the west coast of India from the afternoon of April 21 and  will continue  today April 23.”

An earlier bulletin mentioned that that there was a possibility that sea would be rough near the shore and also, the low-lying areas (Udupi, Murudeshwar and Gokarna) might experience surges intermittently  due to the effect of high period swell waves having 1.7 metres to 2.1 metres height. It said that the rough condition of the sea is likely today Monday.

Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency Services personnel took up works to drain out water from the affected houses.

K.S. Jayappa, a professor of Marine Geology, Mangalore University, stated that when two long shore currents converge, rip currents are formed which usually move off shore. In rare cases, waves may push that volume of water onto the shore.
