School principal Anuradha Shivaram said their community service club took the lead in collecting donations for the NGO. The donations were completely voluntary and made with the permission of parents. The donations were collected in December, which is celebrated by the school as a month dedicated to community service.

Ms. Shivaram said it was in the first week of December that she floated the idea of collecting donations on behalf of the NGO during the parent-teachers association (PTA) meeting. The PTA president and other parents agreed to the idea and the donations were collected. The students managed to collect Rs. 1,36,064 from their parents and other family members. A cheque for this amount was presented to Mohan D’Souza, National Head-Direct Marketing, Habitat for Humanity, on Thursday.

Mr. D’Souza said the money would go into projects being implemented by the NGO in Bengaluru and other parts of the county. He said Manipal School was the first school in Mangauluru to have made a donation to the NGO. As many as 250 schools from across the country have partnered with Habitat for Humanity in building sanitation units and houses, he added.
