Brahmavar, June 20, 2018:  Sasthana Mitra Sanghatane of Udupi district has made a significant effort towards saving environment by encouraging afforestation in its own way.  The assocation had prepared and distributed 15,000 seed balls to people last year which were thrown in open spaces. The seed balls were thrown on grazing land, hills and other areas after monsoon catches up for plants to grow naturally.

The association had trained students in schools, colleges, self help groups and various social organisations to prepare seed balls in June last year for this monsoon. Seeds of fruit-bearing and shade-providing trees like tamarind, Rama Phala, Kadamba, Honge and Banyan are prepared and planted at various places.

Association president Vinayachandra said that nature lovers in Sagar, Teerthahalli, Tumakuru, Shivamogga and Chikkaballapur also obtain seed balls from the association. Uttishtha Bharata and Balkudru Mutt supply seeds to Sasthana Mitra Sangatane.

The association has also carried out a unique initiative of distributing seed balls to guests attending family functions, public events and festive occasions.

More than 20 active members from the association go to forest areas and plant seed balls. The association also has led a campaign and has distributed around 12 lakh seed balls.

The seed balls are prepared by covering the seed with a mixture of clay, cow dung and water. These balls are dried in sunlight for two days and are later planted during the rainy season.
