Kateel was speaking after launching the SAGY project at Balpa village on Monday. "Our aim is to make Balpa a model village in terms of progress in implementation of SAGY in the nation. The Prime Minister has called upon MPs to take the help of corporate companies, banks and other institutions to implement the SAGY. It is praiseworthy that several corporate companies, NGOs and banks have joined hands to fulfill the dreams of making Balpa a model village through their CSR initiatives," Kateel said.

Syndicate Bank has already released Rs 20 lakh with plans of providing solar lamps to the village, e-classes for six government schools and to provide solar deep freezer to public health centre. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has come forward offering construction of a community hall at a cost of Rs 20 lakh. Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) will sponsor construction of a model gram panchayat building. While Manglaore Chemicals and Fertilisers (MCF) have offered to provide infrastructure for community health centre, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) and KIOCL Limited will donate funds for the development of six schools and two anganwadis in the village. Selco Solar will facilitate e-school project by providing computers, projectors and screens to schools in the village. Mangalore University, Alva’s Education Foundation and Srinivas Group of Institutions too have agreed to join hands in the SAGY project in Balpa with various programmes including socio-economic survey, he said.

In the second phase of SAGY, roads will be developed, water supply scheme will be implemented and special drive will be launched to provide electricity connection to all houses. The focus in third phase of SAGY will be for an overall social and cultural development of the village. Special emphasis will be given for organic farming, preservation of cattle and for the development of nine temples. Balpa will be made a hut-free and kerosene-free village within three years.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, who is the nodal officer for SAGY, said that Balpa village lacks basic infrastructure and the project needs to be implemented effectively. "All development works to be implemented as part of SAGY should be result-oriented and eco-friendly. The district administration will soon conduct revenue adalats to make land survey and land records in order. We need to hold quarterly review meeting to ensure that the project is being taken up properly. We also should make Balpa a litigation-free and corruption-free village," he added.

MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary announced that Rs 10 lakh will be sanctioned through his local area development fund for the implementation of SAGY in Balpa.
