Sand mining in DK this monsoon to be suspended: DC

Mangaluru, May 23, 2015:  DK DC is all for implementing blanket ban on sand mining in the district during rainy season.  The move in the wake of frequent complaints that major roads in the district are being destroyed due to plying of heavy trucks that carry sand.

Sand mining in DK this monsoon to be suspended: DC 1The level of damage will be more during rainy season if sand trucks are allowed to play. Hence, the district administration has decided to ban sand mining activities completely in the district during rainy season.

Ban will be in force from June 15, said DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim.

The district administration had already imposed a complete ban on transportation of sand to Bengaluru and Mysuru in heavy trucks that have 10 or more wheels from April second week. This ban was imposed following complaints from police officials of Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Dakshina Kannada about transportation of sand in heavy trucks resulting in damage of roads to Bengaluru and Mysuru.

Similarly, the district administration had issued an order on May 10 banning transportation of sand through Charmadi Ghat too.

The ban was imposed in the wake of complaints of road damage and possibilities of accident on Shiradi stretch. Sand trucks ban on Charmadi Ghat is in force from May 9 till midnight on June 8. With the introduction of ban on sand mining, entire sand transportation will be haulted during the rainy season.

It may be recalled that plying of vehicles is completely banned on Mangaluru - Bengaluru route via Shiradi Ghat from January 2 to facilitate road widening. At present, all vehicles including buses to Bengaluru are being plied through alternative routes via Charmadi and Sampaje Ghats.
