Udupi, Dec 17, 2019:  Speaking at a meeting of Sakhi Task Force,  Udupi DC G Jagadeesha said that the Sakhi Centre helps victims with all possible rehabilitation processes. Udupi DC G Jagadeesha added underprivileged women, who are in distress, should extensively utilise the services of Sakhi, a one-stop centre for women.

Udupi DC.jpgThe DC said awareness about the centre should be created at Gram Sabhas in Gram Panchayats. Posters and pamphlets should be used to promote the Sakhi Centres in Gram Panchayats, he added.

He said from July to November, 13 domestic violence cases, one sexual harassment case and seven other cases were reported. Six cases have been disposed of so far.

Eight cases are in court and seven cases are at counselling stage, he added.

The Udupi DC instructed the officers to approach the police to consider the cases registered in police stations and help the women in distress.

In another meeting held on Anti Child Marriage Act, he said those who take part in the child marriages are liable for stringent punishment.

He said the teachers should be aware and keep an eye on the long absentee girl students in classes.

Pamphlets should be made and distributed in schools and colleges. Though there are no reports on child marriages in the district, there are possibilities of such incidents taking place among migratory communities, he said.

Jagadeesha said that line drawings on the laws and ill-effects of child marriages will come up at 90 places.

He directed the officers to make a list of the women and children who go missing.

He said that the children, who are rescued from begging, should be rehabilitated at the centres available in the district and they should be assured of education.

There should be a regular verification about their attendance in schools and the parents should be taken into confidence to prevent them from pushing their children into begging, he added. The inputs have been serious and good outcomes are expected .
