SW Monsoon in force in coastal belt, Malnad regions

Mangaluru, July 21, 2019: Coastal belt regions, Gadag and Shivamogga districts continued to receive heavy rainfall on July 20, Saturday.

Udupi district recorded heavy to normal rainfall in the last 24 hours. Several low-lying areas in the district remained partially inundated and the roads under construction were flooded artificially. Sea erosion at Padubidri and Tenka Yermal beach continued as huge waves lashed the shore.

Kundapur taluk received 96.0 mm of rainfall coupled with gusty winds. Two houses in Gujjadi were damaged. One belongs to Dinesha Acharya which was partially damaged as a tree fell over it. While the house of Chandra Kharvi collapsed completely due to heavy rain in the area.

In Hejamdi, the building of a government higher primary school was damaged when a tree fell over it. In Uliayargoli, a house was damaged when a tree crashed over it.

Red alert issued by the IMD after heavy rainfall that lashed Dakshina Kannada district,  however on July 20, Saturday the rain was less intense. Following heavy rainfall on Friday, the low-lying areas in Kolnadu at Mulki were inundated. According to revenue department officials, no houses were affected.

The compound wall of a private building collapsed at Karmala on the outskirts of Puttur had collapsed. Puttur CMC commissioner Roopa Shetty and officials have visited the spot. Owing to artificial flooding in the Car Street area of Puttur, the stormwater drains near Mahalingeshwara Temple, Nellikatte and Madivala Katte were cleaned.

Moderate rain lashed several parts of Shivamogga district. Hosanagar taluk reported downpour while Shivamogga and Bhadravathi experienced rains.

Monsoon intensified in Kodagu on Saturday, with Bhagamandala, Talacauvery, Brahmagiri, Napoklu, Cherambane, Shanthalli, Karike, Kutta and Makutta experiencing incessant rainfall. The water-level in the Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala has rose slightly.

Virajpet and Somwarpet witnessed moderate showers. In the last 24 hours, Sampaje received 80 mm of rainfall followed by Bhagamandala — 70 mm, Virajpet — 22 mm, Napoklu — 22 mm and Madikeri — 30 mm.

Landslides were reported at Jodupala following moderate rain. The residents of Jodupala are worried as landslides last year had claimed the lives of five persons in the village.

In Bagalkot district, heavy rains claimed the life of a 70-year-old man. The victim has been identified as Rachappa Maddi, a resident of Beluru village of Badami taluk in Bagalkot district. Maddi was washed away in the rain late on Friday night.

Gajendragad town and the surrounding regions in Gadag district received torrential rains on Saturday. Several streams and ponds are brimming and most of the check dams are full. Underground sewages are overflowing and several roads are flooded in the town.

Rainwater gushed into several houses of Dinduru and Kalakaleshwara villages in Gajendragad taluk. The residents spent an entire night clearing the rainwater from their houses. Several areas in the villages are inundated and residents fumed over lack of civic amenities.
