SP releases updated equipment for law enforcement

Udupi, Oct 02, 2014:  Interacting with media, Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad has said that police force in Udupi is strengthened by improving periodically exiting security facilities with better range of  equpments.

 Rajendra PrasadHe spoke prior to  officially releasing  the upgraded security equipment, the SP said the police special force is currently equipped with Commandos, Hoysala and Cheetha. As many as 30 commandos were hand picked for the intense security set up in the district.

The commandos will be equipped with AK-47, INSAS, SLR, bullet proof helmet and jacket, lathi, body protector, ammunitions and tear smoke. These commandos will be deployed for 24 hours in two shifts, attending law and order problems, road traffic problems, VVIP, VIP securities and anti naxal operations. As many as 18 commandos were trained to date and more commandos will be trained shortly.

He added that 11 commandos were trained at Center for Counter Terrorism and Center for Naxal Terrorism, five were trained at Close Proximity Team, one trained in Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad.  One is trained in the area of shelling tear gas. Ten are deployed for night service and 20 would be in charge of day activities, he said.

The SP said there are seven Hoysalas, which are deployed in Kundapur, Brahmavar, Malpe, Udupi, Manipal, Kaup and Karkala. These are fitted with GPS, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, body protector, torch light/dragon light, rope, body bags with disposable and hand gloves, camera with still and video facilities and electric saw.

They are into 24 hours service in three shifts. The main purpose of Hoysala is patrolling, shifting of the injured and attending law and order problems. Additional plans are chalked out wherein the Hoysala vehicle would also be endorsed as ambulance by training the personnel and introducing the body bags and stretcher.

There are four Cheethas in Udupi district. Two in Udupi and one each in Malpe and Manipal. The Cheetha comprises of PA system, siren, warning lights and walkie talkie. He said that plans are on to introduce PTZ (pan it into zoom) camera to the Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV). The matter has been conveyed to higher ups. Besides, plans have been chalked out to introduce 15 surveillance cameras in Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur, the SP added.  The general opinion of  those present was that a dedicated  approach was essential in enforcing the law in a more effective way.
