SC / ST meeting from next month to be video taped

Mangaluru, June 8, 2015: At the monthly SCs and STs meeting here on June 7, Sunday, Mukesh, a Dalit leader, said that a senior police officer allegedly tried to assault him in one of the earlier meetings and that he had complained to the Chief Minister and Home Minister.

  A  demand was  made for the hall  where the monthly meetings are held, to have CCTV cameras and Sharanappa S.D., Superintendent of Police, said that the proceedings would be videographed. Then there would not be any scope for accusations later on.

 

Under these circumstances, Dakshina Kannada district police will videograph the proceedings of the monthly meetings of the department with members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from next month. The police will also resume the ‘phone-in programme’ where those representatives who cannot attend meetings can convey their complaints over the phone to the Superintendent of Police or the chairperson.

Further, Dalit activist L. Shekar alleged that a trader at Melanthabettu in Belthangady taluk was slaughtering pigs though his licence was to rear and sell them.   A police official said that the Belthangady Panchayat Development officer has given a letter that it was being carried out as per law. When Activist  Shekar said that slaughtering was not allowed, the Superintendent of Police said that he would take up the matter  with the authorities concerned.  Anantha Mundaje said that his wife could not contest the recently-held gram panchayat polls due to apathy on part of revenue officials in Chikkamagaluru district in issuing her a caste certificate.
