Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Nadagouda said that some missing fishermen from Uttara Kannada were the sole breadwinners for their families.

When he brought this matter to the notice of the Chief Minister on Wednesday, the latter announced a relief of Rs. 1 lakh each for the seven families, he said.

Mr. Nadagouda tried to console Shyamala, wife of Chandrashekhar Kotian, at her house here. Ms. Shyamala said that the family members had been waiting for her husband to return for the last 24 days. “Our life has become hard. We do not know what to do? Please find them,” she said.

Ramesh, a fisherman, suspected that the missing fishermen might have been captured and kept in captivity. Mr. Nadagouda said that the State government initiated action on the day the FIR was lodged on December 22 last year.

The district police and the Coastal Security Police had gone with a team of fishermen from Malpe to Maharashtra to search for the missing fishermen. The Indian Navy and Coast Guard too were trying to search for the missing fishermen, he said.

Then, he visited the house of Damodar Salian, another missing fisherman, which was nearby. Salian’s wife, Mohini Salian, said that the family members were all restless ever since her husband went missing. Salian’s father, Suvarna Thingalaya, said that he was waiting for his son to return.

Salian’s brother, Pramod Salian, said that the matter should be referred to the CBI.

He urged Mr. Nadagouda to intensify the search operations as 24 days had already gone by. Mr. Nadagouda explained to him that the matter could not be referred to the CBI. The State government had written to ISRO and sought its help to trace the boat.
