Rivers over flowing, Rain reduces

Mangaluru, June 12, 2018:  Heavy rain in the last few days inundated Hosamata bridge at Kadaba, which affected schoolchildren and office goers on Uppinangady-Subrahmanya stretch alike.   Rain receded in Dakshina Kannada district on June 11, Monday. However, the sky remained overcast throughout the day.

 

In the last 24 hours (ending 8 am on Monday), Dakshina Kannada district received an average of 52 mm rainfall. Belthangady received the highest of 98.8mm, followed by Puttur—66.6 mm, Sullia—46.2 mm, Bantwal and Mangaluru—24.3 mm.

The torrential rain has increased the water-level in rivers Nethravathi and Kumaradhara in Dakshina Kannada.

The water level in river Nethravathi stood at 4.9 metre in Bantwal, while it was 20 metre in Uppinangady.  The water level in Kumaradhara stood at 20 metre in Uppinangady.

A retaining wall constructed during the laying of Padoor pipeline near Subrahmanya Temple at Thokooru collapsed and the rainwater entered the farm land in Mulki hobli.

About five acres of farm land have been flooded with the gushing of water.  Padupanambur Gram Panchayat President Mohandas and Panchayat Development Officer Anitha, who visited the spot, said that they will submit a detailed report to deputy commissioner and Zilla Panchayat in this regard.

Kumaradhara in spate  The heavy rain in Ghat range and Subrahmanya increased the water level in Kumaradhara river on Monday.

The bathing ghat at Kukke Subrahmanya was inundated. Even the toilets, constructed near the bathing ghat, were inundated. As a result, the devotees were seen collecting water in vessel for ‘Theerthasnana.’

Even the old bridge across Kumaradhara was inundated for some time.

Darpanatheertha, a tributary of Kumaradhara river, is also in spate. Its water has entered a few farm lands in Subrahmanya.

A bridge at Nettana, connecting Subrahmanya-Uppinangady-Mangaluru and Subrahmanya-Mardhala-Dharmasthala, was flooded  on June 11, Monday morning. This affected the passengers travelling to Dharmasthala and Mangaluru.

The inundated bridge also affected devotees travelling to Subrahmanya Railway Station. However, the water level receded by noon.

A bridge at Padaka in Balugodu was also inundated. The minor bridges at Harihara, Koppadka and Ainikidu-Gundadka are also facing the threat of inundation.

With the lack of stormwater drains on Sullia-Subrahmanya, Puttur-Subrahmanya, Uppinangady-Subrahmanya, Balugodu, Panja, Kalmakaru, Kamila, Mogra, Guthigaru and other areas, water flowed on the road, thus affecting pedestrians and vehicle users.

There was a landslide at curve 1 and 2 of Charmadi Ghat. This disrupted the vehicular movement for some time.

Meanwhile, the officials handed over a cheque for Rs 4 lakh to the family of Revathi, who washed away in rivulet, at Shirlalu on June 9.
