River bank erosion in Udupi, serious threat danger

Mangaluru, July 11, 2019: Houses are facing threat due to river bank erosion at Udyavara Padukere in Udyavara Gram Panachayat of Kaup Assembly constituency.

About 30 houses in Bhuvaneshwari Bhajana Mandira in Udyavara Padukere are facing the threat. Coconut trees have been washed away in the erosion. 

River bank erosion has intensified in recent days. The residents have urged the elected representatives and officials to take measures to check the erosion.

Bridge responsible :  According to residents, “Construction of a 175-metre long bridge to provide connectivity to Uadyavara Jarukudru has aggravated river bank erosion.”

Resident Yogish Kotian said, “The retaining wall should be constructed to protect the houses from river bank erosion. An appeal has already been made to the elected representatives and officials.”

Minor Irrigation department Assistant Engineer said, “The intensity of river bank erosion has been brought to our notice. Following the recommendation of Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, a proposal for retaining wall has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh. About 250-metre long retaining wall will be constructed after the rainy season.”
