Residents clean Bairadi lake at Padil

Mangaluru, Sept 10 2018: As Ganesh Chaturthi is fast approaching, residents of Padil and other neighbouring areas on Sunday cleared hyacinth from the Bairadi lake in Padil where Ganesh idols installed in the vicinity will be immersed on September 14.

The residents under the aegis of Samaja Seva Pratisthana, Durga Friends and a few other organisations assembled at the lake on the outskirts of the city, off the busy Benglauru-Mangaluru National Highway, at 9 a.m. “We clear weeds from the lake twice a year, once before Ganesh Chaturthi and for the second time at the end of monsoon,” said Jyothi Kumar, president of the pratisthana.

The residents came with vehicle tyre tubes and got into the water body. While one person held the tubes through a rope at the lake bund, another went into the water along with the tube to load the hyacinth on it. Hyacinth was brought to the lake bund from where another group of persons disposed it of. Among those who took part in the activity included Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, Bairadi Lake Samrakshana Samiti members Annayya Kulal, Anil Kembar and Henry Peravo, who lives near the lake.

Before taking part in the lake cleaning exercise, Mr. Kamath went around the lake to have a look at the progress of development work being taken up there. This lake is one among those that the State government is developing. The government has spent money on building embankment on all the four sides. The Mangaluru Urban Development Authority will develop a walking track and make other improvements at the lake at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.65 crore, he said.

The residents accused the authorities of an apartment adjoining the lake of discharging sewage into the lake. The residents asked Mr. Kamath to take steps to stop such discharge.

Mr. Kamath said that he will shortly call a meeting of Mangaluru Urban Development Authority and other district officials to review the development works and take steps to speed them up.
