Researchers need to be generous for benefit of society - U T Khader

Mangaluru, Nov 19, 2014: Speaking at the inaugural of the three day Fourth National conference of Society of Biological Scientists of India (SOBSI) jointly organized by Yenepoya University and Mangalore University at Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte, Minister for Health and Family Welfare  stated  researchers should share their knowledge for the benefit of the masses and their focus should be eradication of diseases from the society in all generosity.

Minister U T  Khader said India demonstrated its capacity to the world by eradicating polio from the country through the concerted efforts of various research institutions, medical fraternity, NGOs and other stakeholders. He further said with the identification of newer diseases scientists and researchers’ role is crucial in detection, diagnosis and management. U T  Khader emphasized the need for close network of researchers’ with the government in undertaking need based programmes.

It is high time that researchers should make innovations in the field of science and health care for the benefit of the community. Government and private institutions should strive to educate the people on better life styles, good food habits and more specifically on prevention of diseases,’’ he observed.

Dr Ravi Vasantapuram, Registrar of NIMHANS Bangalore in his key note address outlined the recent advancements and significant contributions of molecular diagnostics for human viral infections.

Prof K.Byrappa, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University released the Conference Souvenir. He called for interdisciplinary approach in providing solutions to health problems and opined basic sciences should go hand in hand with technical education. Y Abdulla Kunhi, Chancellor, Yenepoya University in his presidential speech opined the outcome of the two days conference should propose mechanisms to improve the quality of health care and research. He reiterated that in Yenepoya University constant efforts are being made to improve and upgrade the services in keeping with the pace of the changes taking place in the contemporary society. Dr P Chandramohan, VC, Yenepoya University also spoke.

As part of the conference Dr Ullas Kamath, Dr P Chandramohan, Dr Mohammad Fazlur Rehaman and Dr G Arunkumar were presented SOBSI fellowships for their achievements in the field of Biochemistry, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Virology and Pathology respectively during the programme.   More than 250 delegates from various fields of basic sciences and health care delivery services across the country are participating in the conference. Paper and poster presentations, panel discussions and film shows are being arranged during the conference which will conclude November 20.
