Renowned folk scholar Dr Susheela P. Upadhyaya passes away

Udupi, Jan 15, 2014: Dr Susheela P Upadhyaya, a renowned folk scholar as well as linguist  passed away at a private hospital in Udupi on January 14, Tuesday. She was 77 and was ailing since some time. She is survived by her husband Dr UP Upadhyaya, who is also a well-known scholar, a son and daughter.

Hailing from Majoor village she was the daughter of Padmanabha Sharma who was a priest at Tiruvananthapuram. She  secured her MA in Hindi from Banaras University and also had a post graduate degree in Linguistic Sciences from Pune University. She also had a doctorate on the subject. She began her career in MGM College Udupi as a Hindu tutor in 1958 and later served in Sacred Heart College in Bangalore. She   even served as a researcher at Pune Deccan College. Later she served as research officer at Manasagangotri  and even brought out a book named ‘Vyasanga Shikshaka’ in three volumes for the benefit of college students. She had also authored  ‘Hindi Kannada Samaana Padakosha’ and ‘Vibhaasheye  Dhwanivijnana.’ Some of her research works are ‘Janapada Araadhane mattu Rangakalegalu,’ ‘Dakshina Bharatha Janapada ‘  and ‘Malayala Bhashe mattu Sahitya.’

She was also the first person to secure a  doctorate  for Beary language for her thesis titled ‘Descriptive and Comparative Study of the Beary Language of Dakshina Kannada.’
