Speaking at a meeting, he directed the officials to submit a report on the work on stormwater drains, the reasons for incomplete works and the details on the sewage flowing in open drains within seven days. “The drainage system does not appear to be functioning, as a majority of the stormwater drains have become open sewage carriers. This has been creating inconvenience to the residents. The officials should check the release of sewage into the stormwater drains,” he said.

He collected details on SFC grant, CM special grant, grants from 13th and 14th Finance Commissions and also on works to be initiated under second phase of ADB-funded project. The problems in wards related to UGD should be rectified immediately, he said.

Water shortage  :  Stating that 38 wards in Mangaluru do not get 24X7 water supply, the MLA directed the water supplying division engineer to set right the problem immediately.

“At least one ward should be made a model by supplying water 24X7. Priority should be given for cleaning overhead tanks, sumps in the MCC jurisdiction. The silt-removing machine, cess pool, skylift machines should be utilised effectively,” Kamath said.

He also sought details on illegal water connections between Thumbe and Mangaluru wetwells and treatment plants.

“Unscientific water bills are issued to some residents in the city, which should be rectified immediately. Measures should be taken to remove the silt from the stormwater drains. The work on removing the silt should be entered in log books, with photographs,” he told the officials.

He said that even the civic workers mix the waste, even if the residents supply segregated waste at the source.

There is a need to create awareness on segregation of waste at the source, he added.

He said that he has received complaints on delay in issue of birth and death certificates and renewal of trade licence.
