Record number of progress works in DK: Palemar

Mangalore, Jan 26: A record number of developmental programmes worth Rs 950 crores have been implemented in Dakshina Kannada district during the past one and a half years, said District in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar.

Delivering the Republic Day address after hoisting the National Tri-colour at the 61st Republic Day celebrations held at the Nehru Maidan in the city on January 26, Tuesday morning, he said a sum of Rs 399 lakh bas been spent towards improving the drinking water supply situation in the district, out of the Rs 770 lakh sanctioned for the year 2009-2010.


The Minister informed that a sum of Rs 167 lakh had been sanctioned under the Grameen Sadak Yojana and Rs 6,313 lakh under PMGSY for the improvement of rural roads in the district.


The State Government’s innovative Scheme “Saurabelaku” has also been introduced in the district, he said and added under the scheme around 178 solar street lights would be installed at a cost of Rs 50 lakhs in gram panchayat level.

The Minister also read out a report on the various schemes and developmental programmes initiated in the district during the year 2009-2010.


Many achievers who have brought laurels to their city as well as to the district were honoured for their distinctive achievements. 


K Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, President, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, N Yogish Bhat, Legislator and Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC and Vice President, NRI Committee, participated as the chief guests.


V Ponnuraj, Deputy Commissioner, B Nagaraj Shetty, President of Coastal Development Authority, U T Khader, Legislator and Shankar Bhat, city Mayor, were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, the Minister received a guard of honour in an open jeep. Students from various schools as well as the police force presented an attractive march-past and entertainment programme on the occasion.
