Re-investigation ordered into death of girl students

Puttur, Feb 28, 2018 : State Women’s Commission chairperson Nagalakshmi Bai said that the Police Department has been directed to re-investigate cases of deaths of girl students in Dakshina Kannada including 20-year-old Sowmya Bhat of Puttur, Sowjanya of Dharmasthala and Pushpalatha of Uppinangady.

Addressing reporters in Puttur on Monday, she said that the murder of two Muslim women near Kabaka railway station, the mysterious death of Venkataramana Bhat family in Kakkur have also been asked to be reopened.

She meanwhile condemned the murder of student Akshata in Sullia in broad daylight. The incident has created fear among women. In Dakshina Kannada, protests are conducted only when people are murdered by culprits belonging to other communes. But, if the murder is committed by the person of the same commune, it is ignored, she said.

Silence condemned

Accusing that Sullia MLA Angara has not taken the case seriously, Nagalakshmi Bai said that district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai did not have the courtesy of at least speaking to the bereaved family. She also questioned the silence of union minister D V Sadananda Gowda, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MP Shobha Karandlaje.

The State Women’s Commission chairperson said that she has spoken to the Superintendent of Police on the case. The CCTV footage is being looked into by the police. The accused should not be able to escape, she said.

Job for family member

She further said that she visited the family of deceased student Akshata. Akshata’s family is financially backward. An amount Rs 25,000 has been provided to the family under the Sthairya Nidhi scheme of the state government. Efforts will also be made to provide a job to a family member of Akshata, she said and asked elected representatives of the region to aid the family.

Nagalakshmi Bai said that the prostitution racket facilitated in houses, resorts and home-stays of Mangaluru has come to her notice. There is also information about some police personnel involved in it. The Police Department has been asked to initiate action on the same, she added.
