Rape-murder accused escapes from police custody

Udupi, Apr 01, 2019: A 39-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with abduction, sexual assault and murder of a 17-year old minor girl, escaped from police custody when he was being shifted to Hiriyadka jail in Udupi on March 31, Sunday.

Hanumanthappa Bassappa Kambali, a native of Badami in Bagalkot district and a resident of Kaup, was arrested  late on March 30, Saturday night for rape and murder of a teenager at Shivalli on March 9.

He was produced before the magistrate at latter’s house and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Kambali escaped when he was being shifted to Hiriyadka jail.

Information is solicited from the public. Kambali is of dark complexion and around 5 foot tall. He was wearing green colour pant and thrown away the shirt he was wearing. If he is seen by anyone, people may immediately inform Udupi police.

Three teams had been formed by the Superintendent of Police Nisha James to crack the murder case. The teams, after collecting clues from the CCTV footage, were able to sketch the image of the Kambali who was later arrested.

Kambali had come in contact with the victim in the first week of March and had even assured her to get a job.

He then took her to a deserted area in Mudusagri where he sexually assaulted her. When the victim threatened to disclose the incident, the arrested strangulated the victim to death using her shawl. The accused had gone absconding after the murder. A case was registered under Pocso Act in Manipal police station.
