Rainfall deficit in DK in July put at 530mm, water position troubling

Mangaluru, Aug 1,2017: It is question always green these days, will the city face drinking water problems during summer next year? With the peak month of monsoon season, July producing light to moderate irregular rainfall, the rain deficit is slowly mounting. It has gone up to 22 per cent and in absolute terms it is a whopping 530mm deficit.

 

Though June, the first month of the monsoon season, offered hope for DK district with the deficit coming down to just 11% on the lines of IMD prediction, July month has failed  expectation.  The normal rainfall in July month is 1,217 mm. This year, the district received only 819 mm, which is 33% less than normal rainfall. Last year the district had received 938mm of rainfall and at 819mm this year, the deficit is 13% in July month alone.

The district had witnessed 42% deficit rainfall by mid-June. The district receives an average rainfall of 2,393mm from January to July end. As on date, the district has received 1,863 mm which is 530 mm short than what the district receives as normal rainfall. Even if compared with last year’s rainfall, the district has received 165mm in the first seven months of the year. What about rain in catchment areas?
