Rain pours on coastal districts, water everywhere

Ramasevaka, (36), lost his life after he was trapped under a huge tree when it uprooted, at Malker in Panemangaluru, Bantwal taluk.

The incident occurred when he went to answer Nature’s call on Wednesday afternoon. He was a native of Unnava of Uttar Pradesh.

Another person Dilip, has suffered serious injuries.

Heavy  rain :  Dakshina Kannada district has recorded an average rainfall of 91.8 mm, during the last 24 hours, ending on Wednesday 8 am.  A total of 130 mm rain has been recorded in Mangaluru taluk while in Bantwal taluk, the rainfall recorded has been 116.9 mm.

DK DC Sasikanth Senthil has directed the heads of education institutions all over the district to declare holidays for schools, if necessary, after looking at the situation.  In fact, it rained throughout the day on June 20,  Wednesday, without giving much break, aged people recalled the monsoon weather of the past, unseen for long.

Trees have also been uprooted in Vittal. Poultry farm and areca plantations have been damaged in the rain havoc in the region.

Water levels high  :  All the three major rivers in Dakshina Kannada district – Netravathi, Kumaradhara and Phalguni – are in spate. Additional water collected is being released out of Malavoor vented dam.

On the other hand, the sea too has become rough in Kanakoda Padukere beach at Udyara, Udupi district. A well caved in at Ermal in Padubidri.

After decades of deficit, the rainfall in Dakshina Kannada breached the normal rainfall record for the first six months, by recording 59mm extra rainfall than what the district records from January to June.
The rainfall figures show the district received extra 59mm of rainfall before the end of June month indicating the district is all set to receive above average monsoon. While the district records 1176.2 mm of normal rainfall from January to June, this year the rainfall has been 1235.3 mm, an extra 59mm that too with 10 more days to go for the end of the month. Last year, the district had received 638.4 mm - a deficit of 537.8 mm! Previous years too, the monsoon-health of the district wasn’t too rosy.

Of the five taluks of DK District, Mangaluru taluk received the highest amount of rainfall at 1358mm in the first eight months – thanks to the May 29 deluge which recorded over 280mm of rainfall on a single day. With the eight month normal rainfall for Mangaluru taluk being 1248mm, the taluk received 110mm of excess rainfall. Last year the eight month rainfall was half at 642mm.

The other taluks, barring Bantwal taluk, received more than the normal eight month rainfall figures. Bantwal taluk received 1107mm of rainfall which is 111mm less than the normal eight month rainfall for Bantwal taluk.

JUNE MONTH ALSO GETS GOOD RAINFALL: The district received 735mm of rainfall in the first 20 days of the month, which is just 200mm short of normal average for June month (942mm). With another 10 days to go and with Met Department predicting good rains, this too is likely to be breached. Last year the June month had received less than half at 468mm as on June 20. Among the taluks, Belthangadytaluk has received highest rainfall at 834mm till June 20 and the June average for the taluk is 977mm. Last year the taluk had received 540mm till June 20.

RAINFALL ON JUNE 20: The District recorded 92mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours from 8.30am of Tuesday. Mangaluru Taluk received the highest rainfall of 130 mm, with Belthangady taluk receiving the least at 68mm of rainfall. Bantwal, Sullia and Puttur taluks received 117m, 73 and 72mm of rainfall respectively. Last year the district had received 3.6mm of rainfall on the same day. The district receives 941 mm of rainfall as normal average till June end and this year. The rainfall has been 735mm in the first 20 days of the month. Last year it was 468mm of rainfall till June 20.
