Udupi, July 20, 2015: A deluge on July 19, accompanied by gusty winds lashed Udupi district. Following the downpour many low-lying areas and roads are submerged.

The rivers in the district, Souparnika, Kubja, Chakratheertha, Swarna, Seethanadi are overflowing and Kubja and Chakratheertha have crossed the danger level. Many houses have collapsed in Karkala and Kundapur taluks. Trees have been uprooted in many places and a landslide has occurred behind the INOX Theater in Manipal. Movie screenings have been cancelled.

Udupi  DC  Dr. R Vishal told media that he had directed the tahsildars of all three taluks to hold meetings with BEOs in their respective jurisdiction and take a decision on a holiday for schools and colleges. However, all three tahsildars have declared holiday for schools and colleges on July 20 Monday. Kundapur Tahsildar Gayatri Nayak said that holiday was declared due to heavy rains. She said that five houses at Madurumakki in Shiroor are under the threat of submersion as the water had already entered the houses.

The GP and revenue officials have taken up relief measures. The situation is under control. Besides two families in Haladi have shifted to a nearby school as their houses were in low-lying areas. Trees have been uprooted in Ajri and Gudmadi villages. However, road blocks have now been cleared.

Karkala tahsildar said that Durga river had crossed the danger level. A mini hydel power project has been built across the river. The area is flooded though the crest gates of the dam have been kept open. Four families in the vicinity have been shifted to safer areas. The Someshwara river is also overflowing and the road crossing Agumbe and Theerthahalli region is flooded as the water-level in the river has risen to four feet on the stretch.


The vehicles are diverted and the Someshwara- Mudradi region is blocked. The Yennehole river in Ajekaru is flowing just below the danger level, while Shambavi river in Saccheripete is nearing the danger level,  Tellar river has crossed the danger level too.
