Rain havoc in district acute, danger evident

Mangaluru, July 09, 2018: Heavy spells of rain and wind continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on July 8, Sunday, although the intensity receded since the previous day.

Forecast of heavy rain by the Meteorological Department, caused today July 9, Monday to be declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges across Dakshina Kannada district and Udupi and Kaup taluks. The scheduled PU supplementary exam on July 9, Monday will be held.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who returned to Mangaluru cutting short a trip to Ranchi and Patna, visited the rain-affected areas in Mulki, Surathkal and Puttur.  He visited the Shree Durgaparameshwari Temple, Bappanadu (Mulki), where rainwater had entered the courtyard of the temple and the Nadugodu Higher Primary School, where the flood victims at Kelenjaru were given shelter. He also visited Chelaru village where flood from River Nandhini had affected families.

Kateel told media that the rain has caused extensive damage to residents in the district and urged the state government to provide relief to the victims at the earliest.

A huge tree fell on a road at Mithoor on the Mani-Mysuru highway and disrupted traffic movement for more than one hour. With the closure of Shiradi Ghat, the pressure on the highway has increased. As a result, vehicles had queued up and were let on the road after the tree was cleared.

Another tree fell on the road at Meginapete on Vittal-Puttur stretch and disrupted traffic movement for more than
two hours.

Five persons travelling in a car had a miraculous escape when two trees fell on the car at Dharmasthala on Sunday. The car owner Krishnappa and four others escaped unhurt. The car has been completely damaged. The Dharmasthala police and Mescom officials rushed to the spot and cleared the uprooted tree.

A footbridge at Serkala Piliyadka in Kolnad collapsed following continuous rain. The footbridge connected Serkala to Salethoor.

The landslide on Kanathadka-Renjadi road has disrupted traffic movement.

Several houses in Bantwal are facing the threat of rainwater entering. The water-level in river Nethravathi has increased drastically. Landslides have occurred at Navoor, Pacchinadka, and Loretto in Bantwal. The low-lying area of Bhandaribetty, Kanchikara Pete, Aladka and Jakribettu are facing the threat of flood.

With Moolarapatna bridge getting inundated, a board asking the residents not to use it has been displayed.
