Rain grips coastal areas, yet not full force

Mangaluru, June 19, 2016: The south-west monsoon, which had been elusive its arrival on Karnataka coast, appears to have gained momentum from Satusday June 18, with coastal Karnataka, including Mangaluru, receiving an average 100 mm rain.

Heavy rain coupled with thunder pounded the Karnataka coast, and the onslaught continues kindling hopes among farmers in particular and public in general, who had been largely affected by the drought.

IMD, India Meteorological Department said that the monsoon would be very active at least for a week (weekly prediction) across coastal, interior and south interior Karnataka. IMD, Bengaluru, said that rain and thundershowers are “very likely” to occur.   It said the monsoon has advanced to north Karnataka including Karwar, Gadag, Hanumakonda etc., and conditions are favourable for its further advancement to north interior Karnataka.

During the last 24 hours, Udupi received the maximum rainfall, 16 cm, followed by Kumta, 15 cm, Kota, Shirali, Manki, 13 cm each, Panambur (Mangaluru), 11 cm, Honnavar, 9 cm, Mangaluru, Ankola, 6 cm, Gerusoppa, 5 cm, Saidapur, Honakere, 4 cm, Moodabidre, Bantwal, Mani, Kadra, Raichur, Hassan, 3 cm, Karkala, Mulki, Madikeri, 2 cm and so on.
