Rain damage relief from July 9th says Minister Pramod

Udupi, July 8, 2016: Speaking to media after a spot visit, Udupi District In-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said the gusty winds caused a havoc in many villages including Bellarpadi, Perdur, Padigara, Bommarabettu, Puttige and Gundyadka in the Kaup assembly constituency, they suffered a loss of around Rs 96 lakh.  At least 191 houses have been damaged, of which, 54 are completely damaged and 191 are partially damaged.

The total loss incurred following the damages to homes is around Rs 84 lakh and the loss incurred by damages to horticultural crops in the area is Rs 12 lakh. Already Rs 10.20 lakh has been offered as an interim compensation. A sum of Rs 2.5 lakh worth tiles and cement sheets have been offered to the victims. Compensation worth Rs 36 lakh would be given on July 9, Saturday.

A financial aid of Rs 1.20 lakh would be extended under Basava Vasati Yojane to the victims who prefer new houses. The compensation package will also include Rs 20,000 under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and another Rs 95,000 under natural calamity relief fund. If the fishermen opt for the aid, they will be offered Rs 1.20 lakh for the construction of the house under Matsyashraya Yojane, Madhwaraj said. The minister maintained that he will extend all possible relief measures for the rehabilitation process. The one-and-a-half-month-old child Arjun in Gundyadka, who was thrown out of the house during the tragedy, has been undergoing treatment in Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru. The child has suffered cerebral subdural hemorrhage. He will be given good treatment, he said.

The minister said he would talk to the Endowment department to offer compensation to two temples in Bellarpadi and Bommarabettu. He assured he would ask  Revenue minister for additional compensation package for 54 houses which have been totally destroyed.

Eloborating on other plans that is being envisaged, Madhwaraj said Rs five crore has been released to Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) under SFC fund, of which, Rs two crore would be spent on the construction of bridges and Rs three crore on the permanent sea walls at Malpe sea coast. He said a permanent sea wall would be built at Malpe-Hanumanthanagar stretch at a cost of Rs three crore. Rs 50 lakh would be offered as additional fund for the construction of the Malpe-Padukere bridge, which is already under construction at the cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The minister Rs 50 lakh would be offered to construct a bridge at Kodankuru Babbuswami Temple. The Kalsanka Bridge would be widened at the cost of Rs 75 lakh while another 25 lakh will be spent on the construction of small bridge at Kambalakatte in Subramanya ward, he added.

Vacant RTE seats

Briefing over the vacant RTE seats, the minister said that out of 565 seats that were vacant, 354 seats are already filled following the measures taken by the DC and DDPI. He said he has also requested for the relaxation of the one kilometres norm with the Primary Education minister. The remaining 211 seats would be filled by July 8. However, 32 seats in Karkala will remain vacant as there are no takers, he added.

He would meet the chief minister along with Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary to discuss the compensation package for the children who lost their lives in the Trasi tragedy too.
