Railways provides Wi-Fi connectivity at major stations

Mangaluru, Oct 20, 2016:The netizen train passengers can now spend time at the Mangaluru Central Railway Station with the unlimited and high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity free of cost.

As part of Digital India, the Railways have started the process of providing Wi-Fi connectivity at the major railway stations in the country. The facility started working at the Mangaluru Central Railway Station on September 10, and at Kozhikode on September 29. Mangaluru Junction Station would get the facility under Phase 2 of the project. There are 27 Wi-Fi access points at Mangaluru Central Railway Station covering the entire station, including reservation counter, platforms and waiting halls.

According to the RailTel website, the Wi-Fi has been commissioned in 67 railway stations, of which, the facility has been formally launched in 32 stations They are— Mumbai Central, Churchgate, Bandra, Bandra Terminus, Dadar WR, Dadar CR, Khar Road, Kalyan, Lokmanya Tilak, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Lucknow, Lucknow Junction, Jhansi, Mughalsarai Junction, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Ujjain, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Tirupati, Tiruchchirappalli, Ernakulam Junction, Kacheguda, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Thrissur and Chennai Central. The Wi-Fi has been soft launched in 35 stations. They are—Sealdah, Kharagpur, Puri, Cuttack, Hazarat Nizamuddin, Dehradun, Kanpur, Mathura, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Pune, Byculla, Panvel, Thane, Borivali, Kurla, Andheri, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Gwalior, Indore, Ajmer, Kota, Jodhpur, Surat, Hajipur, Gaya, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Madurai, Mangaluru Central, Coimbatore, Chennai Egmore, Tambaram and Kozhikode (Calicut).

The official said that a user gets up to 30 mbps speed for the first one hour, which comes down to not less than 1 mbps thereafter. RailTel has set up a backbone of 1 gbps bandwidth at Mangaluru Central Railway Station.

The work on Wi-Fi installation is in progress at 22 stations—Jalandhar City, Delhi Jn., Anand Vihar Terminus, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra Cantt (Upgradation), Varanasi, Dhanbad Junction, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Tatanagar, Howrah, Barddhaman, Udaipur City, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Solapur, Belapur, Vashi, Kollam Junction, Arakkonam Junction and Bangalore City.

The work on Wi-Fi will be taken up at Jammu, Ambala Cantt, Ludhiana, New Delhi (Upgradation), Haridwar, Moradabad, Bareilly, Chhapra, Asansol, Bhagalpur, New Jalpaiguri, Rajkot, Durg, Bilaspur, Vadodara, Aurangabad, Guntur, Warangal, Gulbarga, Hubbali, Mysuru and Yesvantpur (Bangalore) shortly, said the website of RailTel.

Railtel has a major point of presence in Mangaluru since the region connects Mumbai through Konkan Railway, Bengaluru and Mysuru through the South Western Railway.

The serve for the Wi-Fi connectivity belongs to the Google. The RailTel aims to provide fast Wi-Fi to around 10 million Indians a day, by the end of 2016.

How to use Wi-Fi

The user with Wi-Fi- setting on smartphone should select the RailWire network, and then open browser to railwire.co.in. Then enter phone number in Wi-Fi login screen and enter. The customer will receive an SMS with 4-digit OTP code. Enter the code in Wi-Fi login screen and press ‘done.’ With this, one can use the internet facility.
