Puttur temple Fireworks display to be curtailed

Puttur, Apr 12, 2016: Taking a leaf out of the fire tragedy at the Puttingal Devi Temple in Kerala’s Kollam district, the Mahalingeshwara temple administration in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada district, is playing safe to significantly curtail the annual fireworks display near the temple on April 17.


Fireworks The temple conducts fireworks display at a nearby paddy field annually during the jatra, and this attracts a huge crowd. Fireworks take off around 10 p.m.  The temple, managed by the Muzarai Department, spends about Rs. 6 lakh for it.

DK ADC  Kumar, who is overseeing the affairs of the temple, told media that the fireworks display is likely to be reduced. “The fire works will be permitted according to strict guidelines from the Fire and Emergency Services and the police. Adequate safety and precautionary measures will have to be ensured.”

A meeting was held at the office of DK DC Adoor. B. Ibrahim on Apr 11, Monday to take stock of the situation in Puttur temple and other temples in the light of the Kollam tragedy.  DK ADC  Kumar said that K.V. Rajendra, Assistant Commissioner, Puttur sub-division, and C.B. Ryshyanth, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Puttur, have been asked for a report after visiting the spot in Puttur where the firecracker display is to take place.
