Mangaluru, April 24, 2015 : More than 5,840 public drinking water sources including 54 bore wells and open wells of Dakshina Kannada district were included and published in the Karnataka state gazette.

Public drinking water sources named in DK gazetteDK DC Adoor  B Ibrahim said that as per rule, permission from local administrative body, be it  Gram Panchayat or City Corporation is a must to drill a bore well or open well outside 500 metre radius of a public drinking water source. To drill a borewell inside 500 metre radius, a document from District Ground Water Authority is needed.


Every borewell rig must be registered with the authority. Presently 20 rigs are registered in the district and unauthorised rigs can be seized by the Commissioner, Executive Officer and Tahsildar. Senior Geologist Mrutyunjaya said 350 flex boards, including 146 in Udupi and 203 Dakshina Kannada, will be erected to create awareness about ground water among public.

He said that static water table in Mangaluru is 16.38 metre, 11.54 metre in Bantwal, 9.68 metre in Belthangady and 11.38 metre in Puttur. As on March, 2015, the average static water table of the district is 11.81 metres. It would increse to 14 metre by May.
