Mangaluru, Nov 10, 2015: At least 100 protestors belonging to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bhajrangdal were detained by the police on November 10, Tuesday after they staged a protest against the Tipu Jayanthi celebrations. The protest was held outside the Zilla Panchayat office. The administration has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi at the Nethravathi Hall of the ZP.
Police had stepped up security in the wake of the protest. Several protestors including VHP leader Jagadish Shenava, Bhajrangdal leader Sharan Pumpwell and Franklin Monteiro of BJP Minorities Morcha were seen waving black flags and raising slogans against the state government and district administration. All of them were detained later.
Tipu posters tarnished:
In Pumpwell, some unidentified people have smeared ink on the posters of Tipu Sultan and had even garlanded them with slippers near the Mahaveer Circle. The posters were put up by the SDPI.
The tarnished posters were later removed by the police who rushed to the spot.
