Mangaluru, Dec 24,2016 : Senior Congress Leader B Janardhana Poojary has accused the Congress ruled Mangaluru City Corporation of failing to keep up its promise on Self-Assessment Property Tax.
Speaking to reporters here on December 24, Saturday, Poojary said the MCC by hiking the property tax by 15 per cent has betrayed the trust which the people reposed on it. He also recalled a public meeting organised by the party at Nehru Maidan in the presence of several leaders prior to MCC polls, wherein the party had pledged not to increase the property tax for five years if it came to power. He described the hike in property tax as an unpardonable offence.
Praising former mayor Mahabala Mare, Poojary said Maarla had refused to increase the property tax though was asked to do so by the Urban Development Department." "However, the present Mayor Harinath has heeded to the directive of the Department but has failed to keep up the promise made to electorate," said Poojary.
Once again training guns on CM Siddaramaiah on the issue, he said the Chief Minister could have asked for steps to recover pending taxes rather than increasing taxes at a time when people are already feeling the heat of demonetization.
The increase in property tax will also lead to increase in rents and will hit hard the public, said Poojary.
