Priority to research is the new mantra of MU : VC Byrappa

Udupi, Aug 04, 2015: Addressing  the inaugural function of the Poornaprajna Postgraduate Centre on the Poornaprajna College campus August 3,  K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, said that the university is giving a lot of importance to research and encouraging lecturers in its affiliated colleges to take up research.  The PG centre offers M.Sc. in Mathematics and M. Com courses.

VC Byrappa Prof. Byrappa said, Mangalore University wanted the research culture to percolate to the college level. Hence, he had directed the heads of all departments at the university campus in Mangaluru to encourage lecturers from first grade colleges to take interest in research and also open up all facilities for lecturers to pursue their research.

The university heads and professors are motivated  that if they did not respond to the college lecturers on the issue of research, action against them may be taken.    Prof. Byrappa urged the college lecturers to visit the university campus in Konaje and involve themselves in research. When there is good research, it will automatically lead to an improvement in teaching. It will also improve the research environment and lead to an overall improvement in the standards of both the colleges and the university. .

He said the opening of the Poornaprajna PG Centre will benefit the students living in Udupi and its surrounding areas. The Centre here should start offering more courses such as Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and such other courses from the next academic year. MU is ready to provide whatever needed for the successful functioning of this PG Centre.

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said that Udupi district was always in the top bracket in the State as far as the SSLC and Second Year PUC results were concerned. This was because the teaching standards in the district were high.

There was now a lot of demand for M. Com course. This PG Centre will give an opportunity to the students to pursue post-graduation in M. Com, he said. 

B. Jagadeesh Shetty, Principal of Poornaprajna College, T.S. Ramesh, Principal of Poornaprajna Evening College, B.R. Prabhakara, retired IAS officer, Vishwapriya Tirtha Swami of Admar Mutt, Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of Shiroor Mutt, among a large number of interested people were present.
