As a part World Suicide Prevention Day programme, Health and Family Welfare (Psychiatry) and Mangaluru City Police organised a workshop for police personnel. Ravish Thunga explained that when cognition, feeling sees an imbalance, a person’s mental health goes out of gear.  It can be due to depression, which occurs during long period or a sudden spur.

Citing example for sudden spur, which results in person taking extreme step of suicide, Ravish mentioned that few weeks ago a college going girl was rushed to hospital with slit wrist. The reason for her to take extreme step was that her boyfriend’s phone was engaged for a long duration and she assumed that he has an affair. Growing furious over this, she self-inflicted the wound, but in reality her boyfriend was talking to his maternal uncle as there was some family issues. "She could have lost her life for a silly reason," he said adding that such sudden spur should be avoided. Loneliness is a contributory factor for such tendencies.

He also asked police officers to sensitize anyone who comes to them with suicidal tendencies. "Crisis intervention is the need of the hour to prevent people from taking extreme step," he pointed out.
