Premonsoon rain at dawn today, sight for cheer in city

Mangaluru, June 03, 2019: The city, today,  in the early hours and at dawn was cheered with long awaited pre-monsoon rain today June 3. Many said it was the result of prayers from all sections of people, in view of the water crises and heat. Though this rain is not expected to solve anything now, it is still a good sign said citizens of Mangaluru. No lighnetning, no winds but just  steady showers after midnight that continued well after the first light and sun rise. Hopefully, cloudy skies will bring more rain today.  People, specially children are keenly getting out thier umbrellas as they get set to move out for the day.

Past scenario : The pre-monsoon showers had departed from the region  and preparations are on for the arrival of the monsoon. This time, Karavali is facing a rain deficit by 78%. There is a forecast that the monsoon may be delayed by3-4 days in Karavali and begin by the end of the first week of June.

Last year monsoon started on May 2 along Karnataka’s coast. This year 2019,  the pace is lagging, Karavali has received the least amount of pre-monsoon rains. If last time, the rain had increased by 87%, this time it has dropped by 78%. Last time, there was normal pre-monsoon rain for two months and only intensified towards the end of May.

It had been assumed that this time there would be good rains. But it has been proved wrong. There is no rain in Karavali and the heat is only ever increasing. Since the last couple of days, the temperature has been rising and reaches up to 37 degree centigrade during afternoon.

According to the forecast of the Weather Department, the monsoon is expected to reach the coast of Kerala on June 5th or 6th. Later, the rain is expected to reach the coast of Karnataka on June 8th. Until the arrival of the monsoon, the sky shall remain cloudy in the mornings and rain may be expected at a few places as well, informs the Weather Department.

Serious lack of rain locally :  This season, during the pre-monsoon rain season,  Karavali has received the least amount of rain in the state. As per the stats from Jan 1st to May 31st, the southern hinterlands of the state, the northern hinterland, the Malnad and Karavali areas have faced a rain deficit of 27%, 64%, 57% and 78% respectively. Overall, the state has faced a shortage of rain by 52%. Normally, 178mm of rain occurs during this period, but only 38mm of rain has fallen so far.
In Other areas :  A few places in the state continued to receive showers, bringing down the mercury level on june 2, Sunday.  Dharmapura hobli and surrounding areas in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district received showers for more than an hour in the evening. For the last several years, the region had been deprived of rainfall and people had migrated to other places.


Various parts of Raichur district, including Shaktinagar, Manvi, Kavital, Jalahalli and Maski, received heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.  Kalaburagi city experienced rain with thunder, lightning and gusty winds around noon.

A few trees were uprooted on the premises of the Rangamandira. An electricity pole located near Jagath Circle leaned over, hindering traffic movement. Roads in the city were waterlogged. Drains overflowed with sewage spilling onto the roads. The temperatures soared to 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The afternoon showers brought respite to the people.

Heavy rainfall lashed Gadag city and the surrounding areas in the evening hours. The skies remained overcast the entire day and opened up towards evening. Mulgund Naka, Hudco Colony, Old Bus Stand, Mahendrakar Circle, Zenda Circle were waterlogged.

The canopy over the KRDCL toll centre collapsed following heavy rainfall with gusty winds during night at Thippaganahalli village in Gauribidnur taluk of Chikkaballapur district.

No damages were reported even as vehicles had piled up below the canopy, eyewitnesses said. Chintamani also received good rainfall.

Various parts of Kolar district received showers accompanied with thunder, lightning and gusty winds for more than three hours.
