Poovamma wins gold medal at 400m race

Mangalore, Sep 12, 2011 : M. R. Poovamma won the gold medal for the 400m race at the 51st National Open Athletics Championships, held in Kolkata yesterday.

 

Poovamma, who resides in Mangalore, achieved the feat in just 53.87 seconds and defeated rivals Alka Rani of Delhi who did the same in 55.53 seconds and Anu Mariam Jose of ONGC who achieved the same in 55.70 seconds.

However, Poovamma did not get the opportunity to participate in the 400x4m relay although she had represented India at the Beijing Olympic Games 2008.

Presently, she is at a training camp in Patiala for the London Olympics 2012. Vasanthakumar, the District Sports Schools Athletics coach, is personally training her.
