He was speaking after inaugurating a poets’ meet as part of an awareness campaign organised by the district Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) committee at Town Hall in Mangaluru on April 5, Thursday.

“It is unfortunate that over the years, urban voters are deviating from the voting process and as a result of this, the average voting percentage in urban areas has come down. This will result in the defeat of the eligible candidates and will benefit an ineligible candidate,” he said.

Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Shantaram Shetty lamented on the usage of muscle power and money power to win elections.

“It is important to curb unethical practices in elections. One must prefer brain over brawn. The selection of a candidate who is committed to the society, should be ensured. Youth play a decisive role in establishing a good model of republic,” Dr Shetty added.

Prasanna, Aruna Nagraj, Vivek Poonja, Sharanappa, Shyamala Raviraj, Sudhashree, Chandrika M Shenoy, Aravinda Prabhu, Satyavati S Bhat, Narayana Rai Kukkuvalli, Vidwat, Vishwanath Kotekar, Dr Durga Ratna, Juliet Fernandes, Charles D’Souza and Shamshir Budoli recited their poems.

The meet comprised of poems in Kannada, Tulu, English, Hindi, Konkani and Beary languages.
